Reviving the glory days of Eighties glam rock is Sweden's Lipz. Formed 14 years ago in Stockholm by brothers Alex (v,g) and Koffe (d) Klintberg, with Conny Svärd on guitar, the trio dropped their first single, Ghost Town, in 2012. This was followed by their EP, Psycho, in 2015. Still without a permament bass player, Lipz would drop their first long-player, Scaryman, in 2018. In 2023, two significant events happened. Chris Young joined the band on bass. Lipz signed to the Frontiers Music label for the release of their sophmore title, Changing The Melody and, perhaps, more albums to come.
Now, I direct your eyes to the right. With their look, Lipz reminds me of the offspring of an orgy between KISS, Motley Crue, and an AOR band, from the wrong of the tracks, to be named later. Muscially, they got the song melody, guitar harmony and hooks, catchy refrains with gang vocals, and ripping guitar solos in AOR arena ready and radio friendly wrapper of a three minute song.
There's little more to add to that description, except to emphasize once more the AOR accessibility that Lipz brings to their songs. Otherwise, straight up melodic hard rockers arrive with , I'm Alive, Changing The Melody, Monsterz (cowbell included), Bang Bang, and I'm Going Under. That last song being one of the tougher ones, and should have been released as a single. The AOR is perhaps strongest with By Bye Beautiful and Stop Talk About. A piano and vocal driven anthemic ballad comes with I Would Die For You, which will make you remember the power ballads of the Eighties.
All said, with or without the face paint and platform shoes, Changing The Melody demonstrates that Lipz are master craftsmen of AOR melodic hard rock. These are some fine catchy tunes. Easily recommended.
