New Horizon: Conquerors

Melodic/Heavy/Power Metal
5.0/5.0

Two years ago we were introduced to New Horizon, a project begun in 2020 and developed by multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer Jona Tee (also Crowne, Autumn's Child, H.E.A.T.). The debut album, Gate Of The Gods, featured H.E.A.T. vocalist Erik Gronwall. Now, Tee returns with sophomore album, Conquerors, with longtime friend and vocalist Nils Molin (Dynasty, Amaranthe), replacing Gronwall who has become the lead vocalist for Skid Row. New album also features some guest performers: stunning guitar solos from Love Magnusson (King of Kings, Edge of Insanity), Daniel Johansson Daimyo, Apollo), and Laucha Figueroa (Shadow Warrior, Fallout War) with Amaranthe's Elize Ryd adding lead vocals within Before The Dawn.

New Horizon: Jona Tee and Nils Molin

Thematically, Conquerors is an anthology of songs about people and events that have left their mark on history. For instance, Daimyo refers to Oda Nobunaga who united feudal Japan; Apollo refers to the NASA moon mission; King Of Kings refers to Jesus Christ; and Alexander The Great cites (obviously) the Macedonian military leader who created the largest empire of its time.

Musically, the context is melodic power metal wherein Tee invokes the influences of his metal heroes like Iron Maiden, Hammerfall, and Edguy. The songs are fast and heavy with speed driven by rock groove, then fleshed out with fine song melody, large refrains, and blistering and epic guitar solos. Yet, the songs can have nuances of vocal (King Of Kings) and keyboard (Edge Of Insanity) segues. Largely though, excepting the anthem Before The Dawn, all the songs are a fast, furious, and bombastic rush of energy. Which only makes New Horizon and Conquerors the very definition of melodic power metal.

With Conquerors, New Horizon featuring Jona Tee and Nils Molin, offers another epic and satisfying album of their ambitious melodic power metal, thanks to terrific songwriting and exceptional musical talent. The bar has been raised. Quite recommended.
