Formed in 2013 by several students at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Seven Spires returns with the fourth long-player, A Fortress Called Home. The album follows the path began with 2021's Gods Of Debauchery: a mixture of several meta genres including melodic, symphonic, power, black, and death metal. Ergo, it's best dropped in a progressive metal wrapper. The black and death metal elements come largely in the vocals wherein Adrienne Cowan's range and experimentation runs from clean and melodic to off the rails screamo (Songs Upon Wine-Stained Tongues) to simply god awful spawned by a demon from hell (Architect of Creation).
As with the previous album the music is impressive, bombastic, and creative, and so the best part for this listener. I'll take a pass on the vocals. The whole black and death metal vocal style ain't my thing. Nevertheless, there are some songs where Cowan sing reasonably clean: Almosttown, Portrait Of Us, and perhaps Where Sorrows Bear my Name. Check out the vids and support the band.
