Hailing from Evans, Colorado, Siege Perilous was formed several years ago by five musicians with a love for heavy metal, fantasy, history, and live action role playing (LARP). (Take note, in the photo below, of their stage costumes fashioned from Dungeons & Dragons characters.) They dropped their first EP, Betrayal of the Dracolich in 2022. Three independent singles would follow in 2023. In 2024, two more singles would follow in advance of their second EP, Creation's Call. While sharing stage with local and regional acts, Siege Perilous recently appeared at the Mile High Power Fest in nearby Denver, Colorado.
Siege Perilous combines epic heavy and power metal into three to four minute songs with fantasy and historical themes. To the former there's Oathsworn which comes from a LARP storyline; to the latter, Across The Rubicon is about the fall of the Roman Empire. Shaughnessy McDaniel, the vocalist, has a Master's Degree in History.
Speaking to the EP and it's songs, McDaniel has said, "With each song we undertook the interesting if not daunting task of trying to build a world and tell a story in three to five minutes. We are hoping that each track successfully transports the listener to that place to experience the story first hand. I've always found that the escapism of heavy metal and power metal was one of its best qualities and the ability to leave the world behind for a bit to enter the worlds of fantasy and heavy metal being something that got me through some really tough times in my youth, and that's a huge motivator for me for creating this band and behind the way we try to craft the listener experience into our songs."
Musically then, Siege Perilous considers their peers and influences to include Sabaton, Manowar, Iron Maiden, Wind Rose, and Alestorm. The five songs are generally fast and heavy with changing tempos, choral gang vocals, catchy refrains, and big guitar solos. Oathsworn, Creation's Call, and Brothers Of Fire reflect these characteristics. Although Sons Of The Verdant barrels along like pure power metal with its unrelenting speed.
All in all, if you dig keep it true, epic, and fast and heavy metal with fantasy and historical themes, you will enjoy Siege Perilous and their latest EP, Creation's Call. Recommended. You can buy the album at their online store.
