SteelCity emerged from the "steel city" Youngstown, Ohio, as a potential solo project for founder, guitarist and principal songwriter Mike Floros. As the project evolved, a full band emerged with current members Roy Cathey on vocals and Anthony White on drums, both from (Cold Sweat), studio and touring musician Jason Cornwell (Eric Martin) on bass, and Tony Stahl on keyboards. SteelCity would drop their debut album, Fortress, in 2018, quickly followed by 2019's Mach II. Which, in turn, found SteelCity appearing on the Monsters Of Rock Cruise in 2020. Now, signed to Italy's Frontiers Music, the quintet delivers their long awaited third album, Reverence.
Influenced by peers like KISS, Europe, and Winger, SteelCity delivers classic, arena ready and guitar driven melodic hard rock with a metal edge. With songs written by the guitar player you can expect rhythmic riffs and big guitar solos. These things are complimented by strong song melody and hooks in the refrains. Fans of guitar rock will be especially entertained by SteelCity's style.
Speaking to some songs, you'll find some metal-infused hard rockers with Hammers Fallin', Midnight Dancer, and the bit slow burning Blinded which is tempered by some fine vocal harmony. Losing Control is quite foot-stomping with a big drum start and a tough ongoing rhythm section. Alternatively, I found myself attracted to songs which had that AOR accessible, arena ready, sound such as I Ain't Dreaming About You, Walk Away, the rhythmic and rocking Dizzy, and Broken's steady rhythmic pacing and gang vocals.
All in all, SteelCity's Reverence is a solid and entertaining slab of classic American, guitar-driven, melodic hard rock featuring Mike Floros' roaring riffs and equally soaring guitar solos. Fans of guitar rock will not be disappointed. Recommended.
