Mantric Momentum, featuring founder, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Christer Harøy (Divided Multitude, Crossnail) and his cousin Terje Harøy of Pyramaze on vocals, appeared in 2022 with their debut album, Trial By Fire. The project was ten years in the making, and you can read about Mantric Momentum's origin in my review of the first album. But now, the duo returns with their sophomore follow up, Alienized, which features guest appearances by producer and guitarist Magnus Karlsson, drummer Frank Nordeng Røe (Dimension Act and Withem), and journeyman guitarist Jimmy Hedlund
Concerning the new album, Christer Harøy made this comment: "On our second album, Alienized, we continue to build on the foundation made from the first album: a mix of heavy riffs, twin guitars, melodic vocals and massive choruses". After several spins, I found the album to be heavier than its predecessor: more straight up heavy European power metal with less prog metal nuances.
Considering some songs within Alienized, after Karlsson's orchestrated intro, the heavy power becomes self-evident with Resilience, Alienized, and The Highest Mountain, which has this drum intro that reminds of Queen's We Will Rock You. A respite comes next with the acoustic driven metal ballad, The Light. But more heavy power metal arrives later with Siren's Call, A Stronger Stance, and Barricades, wherein cousin Terje vocals are nearly off the rails. The song Remember seems intended as a metal anthem, but has strong razor-like riff fierceness throughout.
All said, with Alienized, this time around, Mantric Momentum delivers more straight up heavy power metal, built upon razor sharp riffs, speed, groove, and assertive vocals. It's pretty much punch you in the gut, headbanging, metal. Recommended, especially if you dig the band.

By now it's old news. Everybody in the prog universe knows: Dream Theater got the band back together. Drummer and founding member Mike Portnoy returned to his Dream Theater family to celebrate their 40th ... [ Read More ]
