Six years since their inception and self-titled debut album, California-based Pattern-Seeking Animals returns with their fifth album, Friend Of All Creatures. Formed by songwriter, producer, and keyboard player John Boegehold to share his own compositions, he is joined by present and past friends from Spock's Beard: Ted Leonard (lead vocals and guitar), Dave Meros (bass), and Jimmy Keegan (drums and vocals). The title of the album is a line of verse from the Hindu Bhagavad Gita that refers to Krishna as the friend of all living creatures. The album also finds P-SA moving to UK's Giant Electric Pea Records, a formidable prog label.
Conceptually, the album doesn't anything to Hari Krishna or the Bhagavad Gita. If anything, lyrically, the songs strike a somber and introspective chord as if Boegehold is reflecting on the universal themes of aging, morality and, perhaps, the fragility of our current times. Musically, Friend Of All Creatures is completely P-SA: melodic progressive rock informed the giants like Yes, Genesis, and Camel, but also current peers like The Flower Kings, Big Big Train and, obviously, Spock's Beard.
The compositions within are a perfect combination of song melody, crafty arrangements, and superb musicianship. I liked everything about Friends Of All Creatures. It's another fine album from Pattern-Seeking Animals which will entertain and satisfy fans of the band and the genre. Now, I'll let the music do the talking. Enjoy the music videos.
