The old adage remains the same: age is just a number. At 72 years young veteran vocalist Robin McAuley has been his most active in the last 10 years. Known for putting Michael Schenker's MSG on the metal map in the late Eighties, McAuley rejoined the guitarist in 2018 for his Michael Schenker Fest and two albums. Next for McAuley came two solo albums Standing On The Edge (2021) and Alive (2023). Not to slow down he became the vocalist for supergroup Black Swan and two more albums. Now, the indomitable singer returns with his latest and fourth solo effort, Soulbound, produced, mixed, and mastered by Italian guitarist Aldo Lonobile (Edge Of Forever, Secret Sphere, Sunstorm, et al).
McAuley comments on the new album and Lonobile's influence: Soulbound is a much edgier, harder guitar-driven record than my previous two for the label. In addition, I'm working with a new producer from the Frontiers label, Aldo Lonobile, who brought these songs to life with his kick ass production. The fiery guitar work is provided by two Italian musicians: Andrea Seveso (Jorn, Drabik) and Alessandro Mammola (Alterium).
Musically then, Soulbound's reference is essentially guitar-driven melodic metal rock with sharp riffs and ripping solos undergirded by solid hard rock groove. This is self-evident within Wonder Of The World, Let It Go, One Good Reason, and Til I Die wherein McAuley takes more harsh and raw tone to his vocals. Alternatively, his smoothest, most melodic vocals are found on the ballad, Crazy. Then there's songs like There Was A Man and The Best Of Me which move with the haste nearing power metal.
All in all, if your a fan of the iconic and veteran vocalist Robin McAuley you will enjoy his performance in the context of Soulbound, an album full of heavy and edgy, guitar-driven, melodic metal rock. Recommended.
