Saber: Lost In Flames

Traditional Heavy/Speed Metal
4.5/5.0

Hailing from Los Angeles, Saber was created in 2018 by lead guitarist Joel Dominguez, rhythm guitarist Jesus Delgado, bassist David Sanchez, and singer Steven Villa, all who wanted to start and 80's inspired band. Of this idea, Dominguez has said, "We are heavily inspired by all 80s music, we love the glam era as well, as many can tell, we have that certain look that is unmistakably glam but don't let it fool you, the songs are heavier than you may expect."

The band dropped two singles, Speed Racer in 2019 and Strike of the Witch in 2020. These songs would be included in their 2021 debut Without Warning, produced by Trevor William Church from Haunt. The album was well-received by fans and critics alike, appearing on Brave Words Top 30 list above the mighty Iron Maiden. After this Jesus moved to drums, and Antonion Pettinato was added as the second rhythm/lead guitarist.

Saber

Now, after many gigs and festivals, Saber returns with their sophomore effort, Lost In Flames. Dominguez commented: "We lived in his studio for a week tirelessly working on recording and fine-tuning certain parts to songs to make them sound the best as possible. We had Darren Trentacoste mix and master the album and it came out sounding amazing."

Suggesting current peers like Traveler, Evil Invaders, Enforcer, and Skull Fist, Saber delivers traditional heavy speed metal. Their metal is driven by the classic style of twin-guitar riffs and leads which are, in turn, powered by a fast and heavy, groove laden, rhythm section. Above the fray, Steven Villa delivers pitched and piercing, yet melodic, vocals that echo from historic heroes like Rob and Bruce. And this recording moves along quickly, only eight songs under 30 minutes. It's pedal to the metal from start to finish with many rip-roaring numbers including these favorites: Shattered Dreams, Lost In Flames, Steel Breaker, Time Tells All. The one exception may be Shadow Of You which starts relatively slow, only rip into fast and heavy metal.

A final production note: Lost In Flames releases 07 February in digital format. I don't know if a physical format is forthcoming.

All said, with Lost In Flames, Saber returns to deliver a modern platter of traditional heavy speed metal. If you love your heavy metal with speed, groove, and inspired fiery guitar solos you will dig this album. Easily recommended.
