Returning from Serbia, The Big Deal arrives with their long-awaited sophomore studio album, Electrified. The band was organized by the husband and wife team of Srdjan (guitarist, composer, and producer) and Nevena Brankovic, vocalist and accomplished pianist. They were joined by second vocalist Ana Nikoli, drummer Marko Milojevic, and Frontiers exec Alessandro Del Vecchio on bass, who signed the band to the label after hearing their original demos.
The band dropped their debut, First Bite, in 2022, wherein The Big Deal began touring. This included rides upon The KissKruise in 2022 and an appearance at Spain's Rock Imperium Festival in 2023, sharing the stage with Europe and Deep Purple. Additionally, impressed by her her talents, Frontiers Music dropped Nevena's first solo album, seven months after the release of The Big Deal's debut. With the new album, band is joined by new bass player Nikola Mijic, replacing Alessandro Del Vecchio.
Srdjan comments on the new album: "We had the honour to collaborate for the first time with great artists such as Anders Wikstrom (Treat) and Jona Tee (H.E.A.T.), who helped us compose some songs. If you like melodic metal/rock, melodic vocals, plenty of keyboard and guitar melodic solos, two great female vocalists intertwining in harmony, we think you'll love the album too."
That is a faithful snapshot of The Big Deal's musical style, female fronted melodic metal rock. Yet, diving deeper, the songs turn on the favorable elments of sharp riffs, abundant rock rhythm and groove, fine vocal hamrony, catchy refrains, and dualing guitar and keyboard solos. Essentially, the songs have the punch and power of hard rock and razor edge of melodic metal. And The Big Deal packs this into compact three to four minute tunes.
Speaking to those songs, honestly, I liked the entire album, if only because The Big Deal is consistent and faithful to their formula and style But significant rockers come with Like A Fire, Broken Wings, Break Down The Walls, and the inspired anthems, They Defied and Dare To Dream. If you're expecting a power ballad, it's not here. I thought maybe Don't Talk About Love, but no. Yet, the song definitely turns upon a more AOR influence with the vocal arrangement and momentary bright piano, only heavier.
All said, The Big Deal's Electrified is an exceptional and significant follow up to their debut, offering simply well-crafted, solid, and entertaining AOR-infused melodic metal rock. Easily recommended.
