Tyran: Tyran's Oath

Traditional Heavy/Speed Metal
4.0/5.0

This review requires some explanation. This release is not a new album, but a re-issue. Tyran's roots began in 2020 with the DIY project, Martyr, created by German vocalist Nicolas Peter (Beerhammer, Invictus), who apparently played every instrument also. He dropped two EPs the same year with Highway Warriors and Fists Of Iron. Then, later in the same year, to avoid confusion with other bands, Peter changed the band name to Tyran, and re-released the same EPs. Confused yet?

Tyran

Moving on, Peter gathered some musicians from the German metal underground to complete Tyran as a classic twin guitar driven quintet. With a few songs from the former EPs and some new songs, Tyran dropped their debut, Tyran's Oath in April of last year on Berlin's Iron Shield label. Then in January 2025, the band was picked up by French label Listenable Records wherein Tyran's Oath was re-issued on CD, cassette, and limited orange/black marble vinyl.

Essentially, Tyran is a modern iteration of traditional heavy speed metal. What has been lately called the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal (NWoTHM). As alluded to earlier, Tyran's metal formula is driven by twin guitar riffs, harmony, and leads then powered by the gallop and groove of a sturdy rhythm section. As a vocalist Peter sings clean and melodic with a pitched, sometimes piercing, tone. Unfortunately, whether by errors in recording or mixing, his voice can seem muted in this recording. This is the only flaw with the album (and it seems odd for a band formed by a vocalist and principal songwriter).

Otherwise, Tyran's Oath offers consistently satisfying classic metal, which includes favorites like Bomber, Highway Warriors, Riot In The Streets, and Protectors Of Metal. If you're a huge fan of lead guitar solos as I am, they are also abundant and epic across the album. If you get the CD, it comes with two live bonus tracks, Lightning Strikes and Heavy Metal Outlaws, from 2024 festival performances. With the move to Listenable Records, I suspect a second Tyran album may be forthcoming.

All in all, with the reissue of Tyran's 2024 debut album, Tyran's Oath, metal fans get another chance to discover and enjoy their entertaining interpretation of traditional, twin guitar-driven, heavy speed metal. It's spot on and easily recommended.
