Powers Court: The Red Mist Of Endenmore

Powers Court: The Red Mist Of Endenmore

Power Metal
Rating: 4.5/5.0

Even though Powers Court is from the states, they have a European sound to them and that is most likely where they're going to find their biggest audience. I have to admit, European power metal is not one of my favorite varieties of metal. In the mid-nineties when good music was tough to come by I was into bands like Gamma Ray and Nocturnal Rites, but as limiting as that style of music is to play, that genre soon became so watered down you could barely distinguish one band from the next. I tired of it quickly and to be honest, I don't think there has been a great European-style power metal album released yet this century. Or at least not until Powers Court released their newest creation 'The Red Mist Of Endenmore.'

Powers Court is a trio built around singer and guitarist Danie Powers who has a very unique and distinguishable vocal style. She is a trained opera singer, but doesn't limit herself by staying in that mode. Whether it's the ghostly wail she uses in 'The Prophecy,' the delicate high notes on the slower 'Vain Regrets' or the bitter, cynical delivery in 'Cold Day In Hell,' Powers always changes it up beautifully to coincide with the music. She even throws in the occasional growl when it's needed. If you're wondering about her fretwork, rest assured, Danie can tear it up with the best of them. As talented as she is though, it is actually the unstoppable drumming of Daniel Nydick that sets Powers Court apart from most of their fellow power metalers. This guy is an absolute monster. His tight, precise, and relentless tempos are the driving force behind every one of these tracks. It's really easy to zero in on the drums and get lost while listening to this disc.

It's too bad that Powers Court doesn't have a tour planned to support 'The Red Mist Of Endenmore.' These songs are tailor made to play live and would make for an absolutely ferocious set. I think most Dangerdog Review readers will dig this album and suggest that all of you check it out. If this CD leaves you needing more there is an accompanying novel by the same title also penned by Ms Powers.
