Review: Craig Hartranft, 11.23.2009
For their 20th anniversary Pink Cream 69 decided to give their fans a gift, actually three gifts: a tour, and then a live recording for both CD and DVD from a stop on that tour. The CD, Live at Karlsruhe, has the complete concert from Karlsruhe (recorded in January 2009) and also two acoustic songs from Das Fest in July of 2007. The DVD, Past & Present, contains the same, but also includes a bunch more great stuff: interviews/backstage material, Size it up – Live in Japan video from 1992, bonus material from "Live at Masters of Rock" (2007) and much more. Being a fan, and stuck in the States with the probability of never seeing the band live, both titles are a welcome and appreciated pleasure. (A tip of the hat to Frontiers and their US PR guy, Dustin Hardman, for the promos.)
On the CD side, being always a lover of live recordings, the sound and mix is top notch for the digital age. The song selection spans two decades which will keep longtime fans smiling, and new fans wanting to invest in their back catalog. Combined with the visual side of the DVD, Pink Cream 69 shows both energy and enthusiasm as they deliver the songs and work the crowd, and demonstrate a brotherly camaraderie on stage. Though their sound is huge and made for an arena, the 'Pinkies' are found in an average venue with moderate, but appreciative, crowd. Don't worry this does not diminish the power of Pink Cream 69's delivery. There are some real gems here including Children of the Dawn, Break the Silence, The Spirit, and The Hour of Freedom. For fans, both Live at Karlsruhe and Past & Present document what they already knew: Pink Cream 69 are a sensational melodic hard rock band.

By far, Sweden's Eclipse is one of my favorite bands. Always consistent and always entertaining, Eclipse has been delivering their 21st century version of melodic metal rock since songwriter, producer ... [ Read More ]
