War Grave: War Grave EP

Traditional Heavy/Speed Metal
4.5/5.0

Hailing from England, and started three years ago, War Grave is a new metal band featuring members of several defunct underground London metal bands including Demonskill and Muted. War Grave also includes vocalist Roman Kantoch who recently spent a stint with classic English NWoBHM band More in their current incarnation. In 2023 the quintet dropped to singles: System and Discovering My Truth. Now, War Grave launches their first, and self-titled, EP with five brand new songs.

War Grave

Essentially, War Grave is channeling classic and traditional heavy metal. It's the spirit and substance of New Wave of British Heavy Metal driven by a twin guitar assault with parts speed and thrash metal. The riffs rage, the guitar solos soar, and the rhythm section lays down the speed and groove. If you're a fan of the same you might hear parts of Megadeth, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and perhaps Saxon.

This is a brief EP, only five songs so some brief comments can be made about each. The opening song, War Graves, is likely the most expansive song having various movements of lengthy guitar solos, thrashy speed, gang choral moments, and a somber outro. Enchained is pedal to the metal speed metal with sharp guitar line throughout. Witch features a vocal duel between Kantoch and the legendary Tim "Ripper" Owens (KK's Priest, ex-Judas Priest, ex-Iced Earth etc). It's a speedy screamer. The final two songs, Revenge Is Near and Price To Pay, blur the lines between speed, thrash, and power metal while again offering tough riffs and more killer guitar solos. This little EP is essentially early Eighties deja vu all brought forward 40 years.

All in all, with their 30 minute, five song, debut EP, War Grave has established themselves as proud and proficient craftsmen of classic and traditional twin guitar driven heavy metal. It's fast, furious, and bristling with thrilling guitar work. Let's hope for more, soon. Easily recommended.
