Review: Craig Hartranft, 03.07.2010
Composer, musician, and political insurrectionist Allen Johnson returns with his fifth Babylon Mystery Orchestra project The Godless, the Godforsaken, and God Damned. Moving from his assault on Islam, its modern incarnation of radical terrorism, and hypocritical religion in general on Axis of Evil, Johnson directs his lyrical barrage on the current trends of American society.
Using his Christian, strongly right of center, philosophical base, Johnson attacks the modern progressive liberalism, from President Obama to his congressional lackeys to Hollywood leeches and media whores (Catspaw and We Is Killin' Me). Along the way he expose the American holocaust of human abortion (A Constitutional Right/Jesus Save), evolutionary teaching (Godless), and prove that tolerance is not virture (Hate Crime). Johnson is neither subtle or apologetic in his views. He desires to incite and inflame his opponents as inspire and challenge. Political incorrectness is not a heart worn on his sleeve, but a bloody badge of honor pinned to his musical compositions.
As for the music, BMO strays little from past work. Johnson vocals are more spoken than song diatribes. If there is some novelty at all, at times 3G sounds like Rob/White Zombie with little funk and more plodding. But, generally, the music is pure classic heavy metal nearer to sluggish Black Sabbath with doses of gothic rock. Johnson never declares himself a virtuoso musicians, although his compositions are sound and entertaining. His art exists only for a purpose. If you've got the balls, or intellectual stomach, to consider his controversial thoughts and commentary, you'll find The Godless, the Godforsaken, and God Damned intriguing and, possibly, disturbing.
