Older and wiser, maybe. Still delivering kick ass melodic hard rock, absolutely. Sweden's international phenom Treat returns with their sixth studio album, Coup de Grace, 25 years from their debut Scratch and Bite. Wisdom and maturity, wives, girlfriends and children have a way of sobering most rockers (hopefully); but for those rockers, no matter the age, with a song in their hearts and fire in their bellies emerge with energy, and creativity. Treat's Coup de Grace proves nothing less.
This album is magnificent, filled with memorable melodies and hooks, big choruses, even bigger guitars, strong vocals, and a simply brilliant production. Many 80's bands, out of circulation for years, make comebacks, but Treat makes their comeback explosive. Skipping the sociopolitical intro, The War is Over begins this tremendously energetic and persuasive romp through melodic rock as bombastic declaration, 'We're back!' The momentum never ceases with the impressive and memorable moments of All In, a very personal and mature Paper Tiger, the formidable Roar, Heaven Can Wait, And We Own the Night. And these are the mere highlights.
With all the rock 'n roll pomp and brilliance, one song made me scratch my head in question. I simply don't 'get' Skies of Mongolia. Is this Treat's version of Toto's Africa? I don't know. I guess, of all the nations in the world, I can't imagine Mongolia as a subject/chorus of a rock song. Nevertheless, this song is well-crafted, very catchy with great guitar work, and so does not diminish from the whole of Coup de Grace.
Treat's Coup de Grace is simply brilliant and entertaining melodic hard rock. I'm finding it difficult to stop replaying this excellent work. It Treat are indeed 'back,' I hope they're back for a good long time. Coup de Grace is a fantastic album. Honestly, though tt sounds like a typical rerun of speculation, Coup de Grace has to be on the short list of best melodic hard rock albums of 2010. Yes, it is that good. Very strongly recommended!
