Okay fellas. Here's Diemonds from Canada, a female-fronted melodic metal band offering their third album, Never Wanna Die. And I know what you're thinking. I know what you want to know. Is the lead singer hot? Yeah. Priya Panda is definitely easy on the eyes. But, just for a moment, can you zip it up and ask some more important questions. Like can she sing? Can the band rock, deliver the heavy metal goods?
I would suggest the answer to both questions is, well, yeah. Sometimes Panda gets enveloped in the mix, as within Ain't That Kinda Girl, but she has a strong and clean melodic voice. She's not a screamer nor some operatic diva, a good thing. Definitely more the rocker, maybe a good touch of punk vibe in her presentation. Yet, the latter comes more in association with the song, like Forever Untamed. Additionally, I'm wonder how much, if any, auto-tuning was involved in the production.
As for the band and music, Diemonds' approach is basically a dovetailing of classic melodic hard rock and heavy metal, with an emphasis on a large barrage of riffage and a rumbling rhythm section. Then they drop in some speed and punk attitude. These things, in turn, are beefed up by strong melody and twin guitar harmony. With their free-living, party all night lyrics, turned another way, they could pass as modern sleaze metal band. Putting these things together with Panda's vocals, the Diemonds sound reminds me of Avril Lavigne, or that snotty Taylor Swift, kidnapped by Lita Ford, whipped with leather by Doro Pesch, and dropped into The Runaways where the three remaining chicks are replaced by four long-haired heavy metal dudes for a more melodic hard rocking heavy metal sound. If that descriptions sparks some interest, you'll like this band. Fresh picks: Never Wanna Die, Over It, Forever Untamed, Ain't That Kind Of Girl.
