For we elder hard rockers and metal heads, England's Demon needs no introduction. In the company of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and others they were, and still are, heroes of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Original founding member and vocalist Dave Hill still leads this rock brigade. Cemetery Junction is their latest, and if I counted correctly, thirteenth studio album.
To be fair, Cemetery Junction is not exactly a "new" album. It's been available in the UK and the larger European theater since last October. Six months later, it's now available for American consumption, and so it comes across my desk*. (For those across the Atlantic who have the album, you can probably quit reading if you wish.)
Suffice to say, if you've followed Demon's career and enjoy their brand of melodic hard rock twisted with heavy metal, you will enjoy this album. But honestly, Cemetery Junction didn't get going for me until the fourth song, The Best Is Yet To Come, which had the proper mix of melody, groove, heaviness, and a catchy chorus. And this is pretty much how I found Cemetery Junction, liking some songs more than others. Other stand outs include Queen Of Hollywood, with a great choral vocal arrangment; Cemetery Junction, another song turning on groove, rich riffs, and terrific melody; the bit spooky melodic heavy metal of Someone's Watching You; and also, Out Of Control, which has a most excellent start, a triumvirate of bass, guitar, and drums. Again, if you like NWoBHM inspired classic melodic hard rock, Demon's Cemetery Junction should be on your short list to buy the next time you head to your local records store. Recommended.
