So much for an objective unbiased review. I'll admit it. I'm a fan of Primal Fear fan, and have been since the band was formed in 1997 by Ralf Scheepers (vocals, ex-Gamma Ray) and Mat Sinner (bass and vocals, Sinner). For twenty years they've been modern purveyors of classic "keep it true" heavy metal and, in my humble opinion, this generation's Judas Priest.
With Angels Of Mercy Live In Germany, Primal Fear drops their first live album since 2010, and their first ever Blue Ray DVD. The show was recorded in the early stages of the Rulebreaker (2016) tour in Stuttgart within a smaller more intimate venue. The DVD, considered here, includes the concert plus additional "behind the scenes" footage (which was not made available to the press) by Scheepers with his handi-cam. So on to some observations.
First, the audio is crisp and precise bringing out three of the best elements of Primal Fear: the vocal harmonies, hard rock groove, and twin guitar leads. Second, The video, despite some glare here and there from the strobe lights, is equally lucid thanks to high definition cameras. These cameras are carefully placed for angles both intimate, as upon a performer, to the wider band and crowd shots. After these thing, as a band, to a member, Primal Fear is enthusiastic and engaging as the encourage and cajole the equally enthusiastic crowd. And they look like they're having one heck of a good time performing. You can tell that they honestly love what they're doing. As for the set list, Primal Fear includes songs the Rulebreaker album, of course, and hits from the past, including some personal favorites: Metal Is Forever, Rollercoaster, When Death Comes Knocking, and the essential Seven Seals.
The bottom line: Primal Fear's Angels Of Mercy Live In Germany is an fine recording of an exceptional performance from the band. Classic Primal Fear and classic heavy metal at its best. Quite recommended.
