Stallion: From The Dead
Stallion - From The Dead CD Album Review

Stallion: From The Dead

Traditional Heavy/Speed Metal
3.5/5.0

Look at the band photo below. Do not attempt to adjust your computer monitor. Germany's Stallion has indeed transported you back to the Eighties, the heroic heyday of classic "keep it true" heavy metal, with their second long player From The Dead. Dwelling in the German metal underground since 2013, Stallion is more properly a heavy speed metal band, yet with the nuances of traditional New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Stallion

In that sense, there's no mystery to the Stallion sound. It rightly consists of the basics, including twin guitar harmony in riffage and leads, a quick and pummeling rhythm section, and generally clean melodic vocal lines. However, vocalist Pauly sways between shrieking and screaming in his vocal style. He's definitely an acquired taste.

As for the songs within, from the start From The Dead is basically a horse race. It's not that Stallion can't vary the tempo. They do so in many songs like Waiting For A Sign, Awaken The Night, or Underground Society. But, essentially, all the songs gallop along with the end game always a ripping guitar solo. Yet, some songs have interesting nuances. Both From The Dead and Awaken The Night have lighter starts: the former with acoustic guitar, the later with lighter electric guitar. Then there's Blackbox where the rhythm section gets its hard rock groove going. For something completely different there's the punk speed metal of Kill Fascists. The song consists of three things: the two word song title lyric, lightning riffage, and speed. After these things, there's not much left to add to the review. Stallion doesn't really sway from their own formula, which gives them an overly predictable consistency (or redundancy, depending upon your impression).

Nevertheless, if you like old school heavy speed metal with blazing riffage, solos, and speed, then you will dig Stallion's From The Dead. Prepare to bang your head and do windmills.
