Chaos Magic Featuring Caterina Nix: Furyborn
Chaos Magic Featuring Caterina Nix - Furyborn Music Review

Chaos Magic/Caterina Nix: Furyborn

Melodic Heavy Metal Rock
4.0/5.0

Chilean vocalist Caterina Nix took the melodic metal world by storm with her beauty and voice when she appeared on Timo Tolkki's Angels Of The Apocalypse. The following year, Frontiers Music paired the two together to create a new project Chaos Magic. Now Ms Nix returns with the second edition of Chaos Magic, Furyborn, assisted by fellow Chilean singer, musician, and producer Nasson.

Caterina Nix

Musically, perhaps the best way to describe Furyborn is heavier then the debut album. Nix and company are definitely leaning more toward heavy metal, even some power metal, with their tunes. The guitars are sharper in riffage, the bottom end of bass and drums much more intense and deliberate. Yet the songs still have the undercurrent of hard rock musical themes like melody and harmony, rhythm and groove, catchy refrains, and fiery guitar solos. Above all this, Nix's voice remains melodic, powerful, and strong.

For the songs, Nix performs solo, but also with guest vocalists in duet. To the former, she rises to shine within the heavy rockers such as Like Never Before, Throw Me To The Wolves, and the darker, My Affliction. With I'd Give All, Nix mellows for a delightful acoustic ballad. For the duets, I'll mention a few. Nix pairs with Evergrey's Tom Englund for the title track which has a definite dark heavy metal feeling. With Ronnie Romero, the duo perform Path Of The Brave, another hard and heavy rocker with tough riffs and heavy drums. Former Sirenia vocalist Ailyn Gimenez joins Nix for Bravely Beautiful, a fine song that blends their combined voices for soaring vocal melody and harmony. All in all, Chaos Magic's Furyborn is another strong and impressive album of melodic heavy metal rock with Caterina Nix's strong voice at the helm. Recommended.
