The tale is something of a legend in heavy metal history. Metallica, at the height of their glory, dropped Garage Inc. wherein they covered a bunch of Diamond Head songs. The legendary New Wave of British Heavy Metal band was promptly elevated to the status of a major influence to many bands. Whereupon founder and guitarist Brian Tatler found himself reviving the band with a smattering of albums to follow. Now Tatler and Diamond Head return with The Coffin Train, their eighth studio album.
Honestly, Diamond Head couldn't be in better form. If you dismissed, or intentionally missed, anything Metallica has done recently, fear not. Diamond Head is here to remind you of the promise and potential of classic heavy metal. Invoking speed, power, and groove, Diamond Head offers the quintessential twin guitar attack with Tatler's fret defying and scorching leads ripping through your ears. Every song here is that proper combination that delivers heavy metal rock with unflinching sincerity. You'll hear this with The Messenger and The Coffin Train, two fine heavy metal rockers. The roaring speed of guitar driven power metal comes with Belly Of The Beast and Death By Design. Bass and drums lead the heavy and dark steady metal of Shades Of Black. With Until We Burn, Diamond Head offers a heavy anthem, mixing heaviness with subtly while Rasmus Bom Andersen's voice soars throughout. Alternatively, I was a bit disappointed with Serrated Love, which simply felt riff heavy and lumbering, at least until the guitar solo unfolds later. Nevertheless, with The Coffin Train, Diamond Head once more reminds us of the power, potential, and promise of classic and traditional heavy metal. Easily recommended.
