Drop Tuned: Lost EP
Drop Tuned - Lost EP Music Review

Drop Tuned: Lost EP

Melodic Progressive Rock
4.0/5.0

Have ever had one of those experiences where you finally got around to doing something you've always wanted to do, and the experience was truly worth the effort? So much so, you say to yourself, "I should have done this a long time ago." Maybe taking that Alpine vacation, learning a new language, or perhaps getting your first dog. Friends Mikael Olsson and Magnus Freed have been making music since the Nineties, but never recorded and released anything. Then with minds and instruments crammed with musical ideas, the musicians decided to go for it. In 2017, they formed Drop Tuned as an outlet for their music, and now they deliver their first three song EP, Lost.

Drop Tuned

Finding influences as diverse as Iron Maiden to Metallica, U2 to Pink Floyd, Drop Tuned offer a modern version of classic melodic progressive rock, with some very strong guitar lines. All three songs are developed with a strong sense of melody and harmony from guitar and voice parts, crafty and catchy refrains, and complimented by spirited guitar solos. Reflecting The Days, a song written early in Olsson's musical career, is a lighter tune driven by a gentle beat, subtle acoustic guitar, and a friendly chorus. Only For One Night, while having a rather light start, develops into melodic hard rock in an AOR wrapper. The beat and groove move the song, but the melodic vocal line and catchy refrain sells the song. Lastly, Lost begins with a sharp guitar start before turning into something heavier in the riffs and rhythm section. Past the midpoint, a bevy of fast riffs quickly turn into another feisty guitar solo. All in all, Drop Tuned's Lost is a fine start for Mikael Olsson and Magnus Freed, two talented musicians with a spirit of musical creativity for melodic progressive rock. Recommended. Give them your support (and then tell them to record more tunes).
