Flotsam And Jetsam, the underdogs of American thrash metal, are still fighting and clawing within the heavy metal underground. Years from their unappreciated and humble beginnings in Arizona, the band returns with lucky album number 13, The End Of Chaos. The album features the addition of journeyman drummer Ken Mary (Fifth Angel, Alice Cooper, House Of Lords, and more) to the Flotsam And Jetsam fold.
The End Of Chaos is essentially exactly what you'd expect from Flotsam And Jetsam: bullet train speed, rabid and roaring riffs, blistering guitar solos, and Eric "AK" Knutson forceful, bit raspy, yet clean vocals. You get it. Flotsam And Jetsam thrash metal mayhem. Yet, the band has the ability wrap their crush of metal in melody and harmony via voice and guitars.
Nevertheless, in 50 minutes, 12 songs simply leap from the gate and pummel you with crack of the whip raging thrash metal. Gallop eventually leads to an abundance of fret board terrorizing solos. And that's pretty much the end of the story. But I did notice one thread that wove its way through most songs. That was the tight tag team of the bass and drum lines, essentially working in fine rhythm and groove. Fine examples come with Recover, Prisoner Of Time, Architect Of Hate, and Good Or Bad. That last song is also a fine example of Ken Mary's exceptional drum skills, where the lead the song and carry a powerful breakdown in the middle. The summary is simple: The End Of Chaos is Flotsam And Jetsam doing what they do best, delivering raging and satisfying American made thrash power metal.
