After a five year absence Sweden's Pretty Wild returns with a new album. Although the band has been grinding it out since 2006, they had only released one album, 2014's self-titled debut. Now aligned with Black Lodge Records, Pretty Wild drops their long awaited second effort, Interstate 13.
If you've forgotten, Pretty Wild plays the Scandi side of melodic hard rock, tapping into the Eighties sleaze tradition. Frankly, Pretty Wild is not reinventing themselves or the genre. The band's musical formula is pretty (pardon the pun) derivative. Pretty Wild offers the usual musical suspects: strong guitar harmony leading to crisp solos, rock beat and groove from a tight rhythm section, clear and clean lead vocals backed up often by gang vocals, and songs written to be sing along catchy, arena ready, and radio friendly. Also, like their debut album, you get your money's worth, an LP worth of tunes with 12 tracks clocking at 45 minutes.
For the songs, Pretty Wild gets right to the rock. Songs like Give It All Tonight, Lets Get Out, Meant For Trouble, and The Way I Am are upbeat and catchy, roaring with fine guitar solos. Pretty Wild also has a talent for developing a solid three minute song. Wild And Free, Stand My Ground, and Shot Me Down are brisk rowdy rockers. And what would Eighties deja vu be without some power ballads. You get them with Thanks To You and the bit heavier Wild And Free. All in all, Pretty Wild's Interstate 13 is another solid, consistent, and entertaining album of their classic Eighties Sunset Strip melodic hard rock. Recommended.
