The history of Germany's Vice dates back 30 years with their 1989 debut album Made For Pleasure and 1990's Second Excess. Then off the map they fell. Their resurrection came in 2017 with a new band and new album Veni Vidi Vice. Now Vice returns with their fourth and latest album 3 Fingers Up which they will support with an Autumn tour featuring Axxis and Hardline.
If you're unfamiliar with Vice, as I was, the band plays essentially melodic hard rock, perhaps with punk vibe. Vice's tunes have a rowdy, rough and tumble, feeling to them that makes you think of beer party rock. If you want to throw a kegger in your backyard, get drunk, and possibly get laid, this album might be for you.
Aside the from rock n roll debauchery, a Vice song is characterized by strong riffs, seething rock groove from a tight rhythm section, assertive yet clean vocals, and ripping guitar solos. All these things are supported by satisfying song melody and harmony and memorable refrains. Some refrains are more memorable than others like the chorus for Fuck U. You imagine how that goes. And therein arrives some of that brash punk vibe. You'll also find the same in the rather decent cover of Joan Jett's I Hate Myself For Loving You. Otherwise, some great party rock anthems come with Shitty Shituation, 3 Fingers, License To Rock, and the re-recording of their early hit, Made 4 Pleasure. Alternatively, Vice mellows out for ballads Dreaming About You and What Will You Do.
All said, 3 Fingers Up finds Vice offering a solid platter of melodic hard rock, perhaps with few twists. If you don't know the band, now's the time to check them out. Recommended.
