Sinner's Blood: The Mirror Star

Melodic Heavy Power Metal
4.0/5.0

This Fall, Frontiers Music introduces us to a new metal band from Chile, Sinner's Blood. The band features the collaboration of vocalist James Robledo (Turbo, Renegade) and multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Nasson (aka Jean Paul Nasson Mateo Teao Teao). Perhaps you know the latter artist from his Chaos Magic project with Chilean vocalist Caterina Nix, also on the Frontier label. Sinner's Blood is rounded out with bass player Nicolas Fisher and drummer Guillermo Pereira.

Sinner's Blood

The musical context of Sinner's Blood is essentially a modern twist on traditional melodic heavy power metal. Modern in the sense that some may find the riffage more assertive and sharp, the bottom end more thick and heavy. Clearly, in every song, two things are at the forefront. One, is simply Nasson's compositions wherein, having written every song, his guitar and keyboard arrangements loom large and guitar solos rise mighty. Whether he wrote the songs for himself or specifically for Robledo, the vocalist is definitely getting the push on this album. Robledo has an assertive, sometimes screamo, vocal style which is tempered by his ability to support the harmony and melody of a song. Sometimes he reminds me of Ronnie Romero or perhaps Jorn Lande.

Sampling a few songs, for things fast and heavy in a power metal vein, listen for The Mirror, The Hunting, or Phoenix Rise. Don't' be tricked by songs that have mellow starts, whether by synths or light guitar, as songs such as Never Again, Kill Or Die, or Who I Am eventually rise to be heavy and assertive. Alternatively, while somewhat intense, Remember Me has an AOR feeling thanks to the strong rock groove and catchy refrain. A metal ballad arrives with Forever, built upon Robledo's voice over piano and symphonic synths. All in all, Sinner's Blood's The Mirror Star is a fine debut for the band, offering listeners a bit modern, yet melodic, heavy metal powered by strong songwriting and ambitious metal vocals from James Robledo. Recommended.
