Arriving from Sweden, Seventh Crystal is the new creation of Perpetual Etude vocalist Kristian Fyher. Intended originally as a solo album, the project quickly morphed into something larger as he recruited additional musicians from Sweden's diverse musical landscape to flesh out his songwriting. Now, Seventh Crystal drops their debut album Delirium, currently signed to the Frontiers Music label.
Much like his current band Perpetual Etude (which has a new album coming out also), Fyher and Seventh Crystal offers listeners melodic hard rock with AOR sensibility in a modern rock context. The rock element thanks to strong riffage and essential groove from the rhythm section. Also, most every song features strong guitar solos. For his part Fyher's vocals both lift and lead the song melody and harmony. But these elements come natural to his songwriting, which also includes catchy refrains. What is notable, but might be missed, is the subtle pop rock nuances from piano, synth, and light acoustic guitar lines that build many songs, and then linger throughout. You'll hear this within Should've Known Better, So Beautiful, Broken Mirror, or Say What You Need To Say. Exploring this idea a little more, with Broken Mirror and So Beautiful, that smooth start turns to melodic hard rock with sharp riffs and deeper groove. With the latter song, the transition is quick; with the former more lingering an subtle before things get heavy. Yet some songs can be naturally heavier like the faster When We Were Young, with its strong bass line, and Time To Let It Go where the riffs are sharp and the bottom end much bolder. While there is some formula to Fyher's songwriting as a songwriter he is crafty enough to keep you engaged, then interested in what's coming next, and so entertained. All said then, with Delirium, Seventh Crystal with vocalist and songwriter Kristian Fyher at the helm offer fans a fine album AOR melodic hard rock in the best European tradition. Recommended.
