Cobrakill: Cobrator

Melodic Heavy Metal Rock
3.5/5.0

Okay. Here's a new band that I know nearly nothing about. Very little was supplied by their label or the band themselves. However, after some Internet research, I've mined three things: one, they're from Germany; two, Cobrator is their debut long player (following a three song demo); and three, they claim to be influenced by such legendary and iconic bands like Mötley Crüe, WASP, Judas Priest, Kiss, and Twisted Sister.

Cobrakill

So, from those things we can deduce their sound: essentially melodic heavy metal rock in the vein of the Eighties. Cobrakill has the hair and leather look of that iconic era. There tunes are laced by twin guitar, rock rhythm and groove, some potent metal heaviness, generally catchy refrains, somewhat raging vocals, and the quintessential blazing guitar solos. Of all these things, I was impressed by the groove of the rhythm section and those nasty guitar solos.

As for the album and songs, Cobrakill starts off on the right foot with Silver Fist, which begins with strong riffs and tight rhythm section before dropping to some fastish melodic metal. The rhythm section, especially the bass, gets the call again to form the foundation of Cobrator which, again, twists the song pacing. Alternatively, brash guitars get Desperados going before the rhythm section intensifies, then it's off to the races. This may be the fastest song on the album. Electrifier returns to the guitar-driven rock sound with its sharp riffs wrapped in some speed. The album wraps up with We've Just Begun, something of a heavy ballad driven by vocals and an undercurrent of acoustic guitar and polyrhythms. While all this sounds adequate and interesting, I felt something was missing. I'm not sure, and will probably have to spin this album a third or fourth time, but what did not rise predominantly was the song melody and a memorable refrain or two. I also thought that their vocalist had one direction, monotone, but that's just me. Nevertheless, for some throwback and traditional melodic heavy metal rock, Cobrakill and Cobrator are on the right track. We'll see what happens with their sophomore effort. Check out the video and support the band!
