Hailing from sunny Vancouver in Western Canada and formed in 2017, Maule is the creation rhythm guitarist/vocalist Jakob Weel and bassist Johnny Maule. The duo recruited guitarist Daniel Gottardo, who has a classical and jazz musical background, and drummer Eddie Riumin. The quartet wasted little time and two years later offered the Canadian metal underground their demo, From Hell. On the strength of that five song effort, the band was recognized by traditional metal label Gates Of Hell Records. Now the return with their self-titled debut long player, Maule.
Essentially, Maule plays classic Eighties heavy metal, mostly known these days as the New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal (NWoTHM). Which is actually a fast-moving non-stop train in the universal metal underground. Maule's metal attack is self-evident: twin guitar harmony and sometimes thrash-like riffage, rock rhythm and groove twisted with power metal speed, and many fiery guitar solos. While the guitars seem to be the emphasis, the rhythm section, notably the bass, is equally effective. On the vocal side, Weel is vocal screamer shouter, but not without complimenting the song harmony.
As for the songs, and for some transparency, the debut album contains all songs for the EP. But speaking to the songs, the formula is simple: fast and heavy, then rip into some guitar solos. Some songs push the power metal envelope towards more classic speed metal: Ritual, Maule, and Evil Eye are heavy and fast as a bullet train. Variety may be the spice of life, but not in Maule's case. Consistency in song structure is the key to their heavy metal. All said, for classic heavy metal with plenty of gallop and groove, accented by roaring guitar solos, Maule and their debut album is the real deal. Recommended.
