The last we heard from vocalist Tommy DeCarlo was in 2020 when he introduced us to his eponymous band DeCarlo (featuring his son on guitar) and debut album, Lightning Strikes Twice. Now, the current Boston vocalist takes a turn on his own with a new solo album, Dancing In The Moonlight. Of course, he's not alone in its creation. The album features Nashville producer and guitarist David Julian; Alessandro Del Vecchio produces, also playing bass and keyboards.
Dancing In The Moonlight is, essentially, a straight up classic AOR melodic hard rock album. There's no pretensions here. The songs are crafted with the usual musical suspects: solid song melody, guitar and vocal harmony, rock groove in the rhythm section, memorable refrains, and smashing guitar solos. At the mic, DeCarlo is in control, singing clean and raising the song melody. No, the tunes do not sound like Boston. But, conversely, the genre context remains the same. You could ride your time-traveling DeLorean and drop Dancing In The Moonlight into the early Eighties.
Song highlights should be mentioned. You'll find the AOR groove tucked nicely within The Game Is On, This Road Will Lead To You, or Home To You. For things a bit more direct, rockers include Change Our Fate, Find The Love, Dancing In The Moonlight, and You And Me. Song composition takes a slight turn with the steady yet mixed pacing of Life Is Just A Game. Softer songs come with Beyond Forever and Spread Your Wings And Fly, a more typical ballad.
In the end, if you enjoy well-crafted AOR melodic hard rock aka "classic rock" with exceptional vocals and strong guitar work, you will definitely enjoy Tommy DeCarlo's latest solo album, Dancing In The Moonlight. Very recommended.
