All My Shadows is a new venture from some musicians you may find familiar. The principal founders are Vanden Plas members Stephan Lill (guitarist) and Andy Kuntz (vocals) from progressive metal band Vanden Plas. Formed in 2020, Lill began with the premise of creating music similar to the classic hard rock and metal of the Eighties. As inspiration, Lill mentions Dokken, Whitesnake, Ozzy and others.
Kuntz came onboard to write lyrics and contribute the vocal melodies. Lill's concept was to use various vocalist, but then he quickly realized, in his musical partner, he had the only vocalist he needed. Lill and Kuntz are joined by Vanden Plas mixing master Markus Teske on keyboards, Michael Schenker bass player Franky R, and Lill's brother Andreas on drums. Eerie Monsters is All My Shadows' (AMS) debut album on the Frontiers Music label.
Perhaps your first instinct (it was mine) is to ask, how is this not going to be another Vanden Plas album or some similar offshoot? While not their intent, the apple may not fall far from the tree. But let's cross that bridge latter. With little doubt and a spin or two, AMS has definitely mined the deep corridors of classic hard rock and metal. The emphasis on basic rock rhythm and groove, song melody, guitar and vocal harmony, catchy refrains, and blistering solos is self-evident within many songs, yet with, perhaps, a deeper, darker sense. This notable with Wolverinized, Devil's Ride, or A Boy Without A Name. But Silent Waters and The Phantoms Of The Dawn truly bump up the classic rock groove. Yet, even within these songs, by their construction, I cannot help to hear some prog nuances. The same nuances, to these ears, also rise within Syrens and All My Eerie Monsters. The subtle twists in the arrangements are undeniable.
So then, is it classic melodic metal rock or prog? It doesn't matter. All My Shadows' Eerie Monsters is a terrific and entertaining adventure into the roots of classic rock and metal, only with some contemporary accents to make it more provocative. Easily recommended.
