Legendary, and iconic, AOR vocalist Steve Overland has had a prolific career that spans better than 40 years. Known mostly for his work with UK's FM (recently 2022's Thirteen), Overland's voice has been heard within many other projects. Recent endeavors have also included Groundbreaker's Soul To Soul (2021), Lonerider's Sundown (2022), and a new project Kings Of Mercia (2023) with Fates Warning founder and guitarist Jim Matheos.
His unique solo project has been under the moniker Overland wherein Steve returns with his six studio album, stylized as S.I.X. The recording features contributions from Robert Sall (W.E.T, Work Of Art) on guitar and keyboards, Bob Richards (Shy, Asia, Attack) on drums, and studio pro Chris Cliff on bass. The album was mixed and mastered by Fredrik Folkare from Dead Kosmonaut fame.
As Steve Overland needs little introduction, neither does his music occupation, which has been alluded to above. This is straight up melodic rock in an AOR wrapper with Overland's smooth and passionate vocals in the lead. The songs are versatile, mostly in pacing, across this album. Generally, however, one might conclude that many songs are more rock assertive. Upbeat, stronger rockers arrive with Together Alone, One Touch, From Now On, Last Breath Of You And Me, and Station To Station. Perhaps the heaviest song here, it's brisk and rumbling in the rhythm section. Alternatively, there's Overland's sweeter side with traditional AOR tunes like How Does It Feel, Things Will Never Be The Same, or Under The Blood Red Sky.
Wrapping up, with S.I.X, Steve Overland, deep in his chosen genre, once more delivers quintessential AOR melodic hard rock, perhaps even a little more assertive at times, featuring his passionate, often soulful, vocals. Recommended, as usual.
