Ronnie Romero: Raised On Heavy Radio

Heavy Metal Rock (Covers)
4.5/5.0

Not unlike his contemporary and peer Jorn Lande several years ago, vocalist Ronnie Romero has been regaling us with his covers of classic rock and metal. Last year he dropped Raised On Radio, an interesting and entertaining album of classic hard rock with some eclectic song choices. Now Romero offers his sequel, i>Raised On Heavy Radio wherein he ventures more into the realm of classic heavy metal. I've included the track listing and musicians involved in the production in a PDF for your reference.

Once more, Romero's choices twist between the familiar and maybe not so much (from my perspective). To the former, you have Iron Maiden's Hallowed Be Thy Name, Judas Priest's Turbo Lover, Accept's Fast As A Shark, Ozzy's No More Tears (featuring former Ozzy guitarist Gus G), Rainbow's A Light In The Black, or Manowar's Metal Daze. Because these songs were most familiar to me, I found them also to be the most entertaining with huge kudos to Hallowed Be Thy Name, Turbo Lover, and A Light In The Black.

Song perhaps eclectic choices and not all that familiar to me would be Black Sabbath's The Shining, Masterplan's Kind Hearted Light (featuring Roland Grapow, and You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget (Yngwie Malmsteen). But they all sound terrific. And there's a reason or reasons for this.

The first and most basic reason is, simply, that Romero is backed up by some terrific studio and guest musicians. By example, besides Grapow and Gus G, there's also Chris Caffery and Japanese guitar wizard Nozomu Wakai (Destinia, Sigh) with guitar solos. Also, what musician would not want to play or cover some of these classic metal songs? One spin of Turbo Lover, Kind Hearted Light, A Light In The Dark, or Metal Daze and you can hear the energy and enthusiasm these musicians give the songs. On top of that, they probably had a shit load of fun cutting these tracks. Finally, Romero throws heart and soul into his performance. When it comes to classic hard rock and heavy metal, Romero is a true believer, flying the flags of these classic genres. These genres are not "dead" when you have the youth and enthusiasm of a Ronnie Romero to keep them alive and well.

All said, vocalist Ronnie Romero's Raised On Heavy Radio is another fine "covers" album wherein he gives listeners an enthusiastic and entertaining interpretation of some classic heavy metal songs. Easily recommended.
