Withering Scorn: Prophets Of Demise

Heavy/Power/Thrash Metal
4.0/5.0

Withering Scorn is a new band founded by and stacked with seasoned metal musicians. Starting in 2020, the principal founders are brothers Glen (guitar) and Shawn (drums) Drover, known for their work with Megadeth, King Diamond, Act Of Defiance, Eidolon. The brothers recruited bassist Joe DiBiase, a 14 year veteran of Fates Warning, and Metalium vocalist Henning Basse.

Withering Scorn

With their extensive experience and impressive resumes, we can deduce the metal style of Withering Storm. The Megadeth reference a helpful start. Withering Storm essentially blends classic heavy metal with the gallop of power metal and the intensity of thrash metal. Going deeper, their metal is driven by sharp assertive riffage, a tough thundering rhythm section, forceful vocals, and fiery, maniacal guitar solos.

Mostly, if you like your metal with heavy intensity and speed like tempered viciousness, Withering Storm will satisfy your need to fist pump and bang your head. Nearly every song is an example of this, and there's no slowing down until that needle lifts from the vinyl. Notable pummeling assaults come with Dethroned, Prophets Of Demise, The Vision, and Eternal Screams, though speed is dialed back a tad. In that sense, similar is Ancient Desire which is essentially heavy grinding riffage from front to back. Across the entire album, Glen Drover's guitar solos are simply killer. You could buy the album for this feature alone.

But, all in all, if you dig classic heavy thrash metal with some power metal gusto, you will definitely enjoy Withering Storm and their debut album, Prophets Of Demise. Recommended for some serious headbanging times.
