By far, Sweden's Eclipse is one of my favorite bands. Always consistent and always entertaining, Eclipse has been delivering their 21st century version of melodic metal rock since songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Erik Martensson formed the band in 1999. Almost to a year, the band revisits their Megalomanium with part two: Megalomanium II. Martensson comments: "If you thought the title of our previous record was proof of us suffering from delusions of grandeur, then you're absolutely right. The only way we could top it was to make another one. Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you, Megalomanium II."
Guitarist Magnus Henriksson adds, "This band is on a continuous journey trying to find new avenues to explore. Having said that, Megalomanium II is probably closer to what people mostly associate Eclipse with. It's filled to the brim with large choruses, beautiful melodies and some amazing guitar playing. I'm totally unbiased, by the way."
Having heard from the band about the new album, you will not find neutral or objective opinion from me in this review. I love these guys, and their music is fandamntastic: metal-infused melodic hard rock in an AOR wrapper with strong song melody, big rhythmic, hooks in memorable refrains and, as Henriksson alluded to, epic guitar solos.
You can listen to the first four singles via the attached videos to get a taste Eclipse's signature sound. Apocalypse Blues and Falling To My Knees were personal favorites. But all the songs are terrific. Divide And Conquer is significantly hard charging and bad ass with thick riffs and a roaring pace. Alternatively, more AOR melodic rock arrives with Dive Into You and To Say Goodbye, both turning on an anthemic ballad motif. All solid stuff, and pure Eclipse.
All said, Megalomanium II finds Swedish powerhouse Eclipse once more offering their signature, consistent, and immensely entertaining AOR-infused melodic metal rock. The bar remains raised, and the band is reaching iconic status. Quite recommended.
