Returning with their third long-player, Video, is Swedish quartet, Fans Of The Dark (FotD) formed by high school chums drummer Freddie Allen and vocalist Alex Falk in 2020. The band has been busy since releasing Suburbia in 2022. Only three months later FotD, dropped a four song EP of cover songs. Cover Me included interpretations of BOC's Dancin' In The Ruins, REO's In My Dreams, Balance's In For The Count, and Rush's popular Subdivisions. They also made their live debut at Frontiers Rock Fest in Stockholm that same year.
Drummer Freddie Allen describes the concept: "Video is about growing up in the 80's and 90's and how great it was to have access to a local video store. The whole idea about going there as a group or alone and deciding on what you were going to watch. It was something you could spend a whole night on, a pastime, something to occupy your thoughts for quite a while. These days we are struggling with our attention spans for just a few seconds. The video era was the opposite of that, everything took time."
Considering Video and the songs, FotD offers a repeat of their melodic hard rock with some metal edge yet firmly delivered in a radio-friendly AOR wrapper. Rock rhythm and groove meld with song melody, vocal and guitar harmony, some synth embellishment, and so produce songs with catchy hooks and refrains and delivering tasty guitar solos. FotD have become, in a short few years, master AOR craftsmen. You'll find some solid hard rockers with The Neon Phantom, Meet Me On The Corner, The Wall, and Savage Streets. The Dagger Of Tunis is a totally guitar-forward with sharp riff and numerous solos. Find Your Love has a synth riff that reminds of classic Toto. The same riff returns in Let's Go Rent A Video wherein the title reveals the catchy chorus.
All said, with Video Fans Of The Dark once more deliver their signature, and entertaining, AOR melodic hard rock driven by solid songwriting, catchy melodies, refrain hooks, and terrific guitar solos. They've become masters of their craft. Recommended.
