Gabrielle De Val and the Dragonlords: Tiger

Melodic Hard Rock/AOR
4.5/5.0

In early 2023, we were introduced to Spanish vocalist Gabrielle De Val debut solo album, Kiss In A Dragon Night, a fine album featuring a bevy of guest vocalists and musician from the AOR genre. Apparently there were several songs created that did not make it on to that recording. "The original idea behind the Tiger album was to be a collection of songs left off the original Gabrielle De Val debut 'Kiss In a Dragon Night,, along with different versions of songs that appeared on there."

Then things took a turn ... all the singers (Steve Overland, Marc Boals, et al) and the label had such fun putting that album together that ever more songs were recorded, with many of the vocalists doing lead vocals themselves. All the singers that appear on this album also appeared on Kiss In a Dragon Night, hence the "Dragonlords" group name.

Musically, I would describe the songs within Tiger to be sharper melodic hard rock, perhaps even melodic metal rock, yet still within an AOR envelope. For instance, Think Like A Man and I'm Chains, both written by Steve Overland and Tommy Denander, but also the ABBA cover Tiger which has a wall of sharp riffs with the vocal harmony. Mike Devine gives voice to the Chesney Hawkes's hit, The One And Only, which add more rock energy to the otherwise original pop song. Magnum's Midnight (You Won't Be Sleeping is covered by Last In Line's Andrew Freeman. The song seems more up beat and brighter than the original. A completely new song, Bowmore, specially written for Robin McAuley turns upon a more AOR, and anthemic, melodic rock groove.

Essentially, if you liked everything about De Val's Kiss In A Dragon Night, you will definitely enjoy it's sequel Tiger, with some tunes approaching melodic metal rock. Easily recommended. (De Val's second solo album, Cry Wolf will drop in early 2025.)
