Mike Tramp: Songs Of White Lion Vol. II

Melodic Hard Rock
5.0/5.0

We haven't had new White Lion tunes since 2008's Return Of The Pride. Instead, Tramp has been revisiting the White Lion catalog from back in the day. Last year, Tramp dropped Songs Of White Lion which featured new renderings of favorites such as Cry For Freedom, Little Fighter, Love Don't Come Easy, and When The Children Cry. Now he returns with another collection of early song, aptly titled Songs Of White Lion Vol. II.

Commenting on the album, Tramp said, "Would Leonardo Da Vinci have re-painted Mona Lisa, if he had gotten a second chance? That we will never know, but I can say for sure, that I am beyond thrilled to have gotten a second chance to re-record and sing the songs I wrote between 1983 -1990. Today I have such a better understanding of how I want to express the songs in my voice than I had when I was in my 20’s, it's just a fact, and I've grabbed the chance."

Speaking to the songs, as I said in the previous review, I did not listen to White Lion nor own any albums from them in the great Eighties. I have no context to compare these new recordings to the old, and no, I did not compare them by listening to YouTube videos. Essentially, the songs within this album are both fresh and new to me and, frankly, pretty fandamntastic. To highlight a few, I really enjoyed some the straight on riff rockers like Don't Give Up, Lights & Thunder, Lonely Nights, and especially the political number, El Salvador. Ballads arrive with You're All I Need, The Road To Valhalla, Till Death Do Us Part, and the largely acoustic Farewell To You, all displaying Tramp's ability to be smooth and emotive in his vocal presence. All You Need Is Rock 'n' Roll wasn't quite the rousing ode to the genre I expected but it had a killer guitar solo. Which are abundant across the album.

I'll conclude the same way as the last time: If you are a White Lion fan, with Songs Of White Lion Vol. II, I believe you will enjoy vocalist Mike Tramp's current, yet faithful, interpretation of some of their best songs. Easily recommended.
