Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Tommy Denander returns to his Radioactive project with his sixth album, Reset. Known around the world as an accomplished composer and guitar player, Denander dropped his first Radioactive album, Ceremony of Innocence in 2001 with the help of members of Toto. Over the years, Denander has continued the project as a collaboration of guest musicians and numerous vocalists.
So then, Reset features such luminaries as Tony Levin on bass and Keith Scott (Bryan Adams guitarist) with vocalists Jeff Paris (Y&T, Cinderella), Robin McAuley (MSG, ex-Survivor), Joey Vana (Mecca), Jim Jidhed (Alien) and the new vocal talent Harris Dio Zindani. Mentor, friend, and renowned producer Mutt Lange co-wrote two originals and sang backing vocals.
Explaining the album, Denander stated: "Reset is a return to the sound of my first records, a more classic AOR, and I've chosen to use fewer singers to give it a bit more of a band sound. The title "Reset" stands for me pushing that lovely button to reset Radioactive back to the sound where I started it so I hope you all will enjoy it much as I do!"
Summarizing the album, Reset is pure Tommy Denander AOR melodic rock magic. The songs are arranged and tuned to the voices of the vocal talent. As a writer and arranger, Denander superbly weaves song melody with vocal and guitar harmony, then adds catchy refrains, keyboards for flavor, and finishes with his signature delightful guitar solos. I always thought the project moniker Radioactive was a metaphor of arena-ready and radio-friendly tunes, because that's what you get with Reset.
Pointing to a few songs, I found myself digging some of the more "heavier" songs like Sentimental, When The Lights Go Down, Sweet Little Tina, and faster Breakaway. Yet you can't deny the Denander's love for pure AOR songs like Shame On You, Shame On Me, Hard Times To Fall In Love, and In A Perfect World. Alternatively, I thought Reset and Gaia provoked some prog nuances.
All said, with Reset, Tommy Denander once more proves he is of the masters of the AOR melodic rock genre. Handcrafted and meticulously executed by talented musicians, all the songs are terrific and will appeal to every fan of the genre. Easily recommended.
