Russell-Guns brings together two musicians those heady days of Sunset Strip classic rock: vocalist Jack Russell and guitarist Tracii Guns. The former rose to fame with Great White; the latter formed LA Guns in 1983. Guns has a few other projects as well: Contraband, Blackbird Angels, and Sunbomb with Michael Sweet. Now the duo present their debut collaboration, Medusa, on the Frontiers label.
For fans of either artist and their well-known bands, little description is necessary for their musical approach. Simply spoken, Russell and Guns deliver classic, guitar-driven, melodic hard rock (perhaps with a blues nuance) with plenty of vigor, rock rhythm and groove, notable refrains, and blistering guitar solos. Russell has lost none of his stamina at the mic, and Guns delivers the fret board fireworks.
Turning to some songs, the album essentially jumps from the gate running hot and heavy with some gusto. The opener, Next In Line is hard and heavy with some speed, then also the following Tell Me Why and Coming Down and later, Give Me The Night and I Want You. Other songs turn on more moderate pacing, such as Where I Belong, In And Out Of Love, and the steady, heavy Medusa. Similar, perhaps even more slow burning is Living A Lie. Back Into Your Arms Again rocks with some thumping groove and tough rips, but then has these softer, subtle vocal breakdowns.
All said, the musical partnership of Jack Russell and Tracii Guns is akin to kindred spirits, both musicians steeped in classic rock. The result is Medusa a finely crafted album of classic, guitar-driven, melodic hard rock. Recommended.
