Edward Box is hardly a household name in the metal genre. He's probably best known in his native country, England. He has released two solo albums, 'Plectrumhead' (2002) and 'Moonfudge' (2006), and also contributed to a Jimi Hendrix tribute work, 'The Spirit Lives On' (2004). Box is an outstanding guitarist being influenced, in his early years, by the likes of Michael Schenker, George Lynch and Warren DeMartini and also encourged by stalwarts Vai, Satriani and Malmsteen. Now, Box has formed a band with the sole purpose of producing guitar-driven traditional heavy metal. To this end, Box succeeds exponentially.
'Tyranny Of Minority' is essentially another vehicle for Mr. Box's impressive guitar work. Moreover, he handles both vocals and lead guitar; the later we need not question, the former is quite surprising in skill and strength. The songs are generally heavy while retaining a melodic atmosphere. Unfortunately, because the emphasis is upon Mr. Box's guitar skills, often the rest of the band is laid waste in the mix. Certainly, I can here the drums, but often the rhythm section is muddled in the mix.
Still, the songs are great. Listening to cuts like 'Generation Kill' and 'Plastic God,' I see that Box has a formidable social and political conscience. He reminds of the best of Megadeth when Mustaine attacks normalcy as he did on 'United Abmoninations.' In the end, this music is his own. Box rips and roars with his guitar on such songs as 'Generation Kill,' 'I Executioner,' 'Bones To Dust,' and 'No Safe Hole.'
If you love tradional or neo-classical metal inspired by great guitar work, then you will love Vendetta's (and Edward Box's) 'Tyranny Of Minority.' This is a superb album proving that great (and traditional) metal is still alive and worthy of our respect. Recommended: buy today!
