Chicago based Mindwarp Chamber is another excellent reason to have hope for the American metal scene especially the progressive metal genre. It's not all Dream Theater and Symphony X; there's a lot more good stuff out there. Mindwarp Chamber's 'Delusional Reality' is no exception. Intense, creative and complex arrangements make for a genuinely satisfying progressive experience with some heavy hints of power metal at times.
An example of the latter influence hits you hard on the very first number, 'Snowdevil Sleeps' where a soft intro motors quickly into a fast tempo and later into some truly wild guitar work. From here, it's more progressive metal than anything else. Although the album is consistent throughout, three songs are particularly noteworthy. First, 'Precious Time' where, in parts, seems to venture into traditional metal. Yet, the best parts are the strong bass, galloping rhythm and varied vocal styling. 'Thought Saboteur' is positively prog with a strong bass presence and the phenomenal tandem solos from guitar and keyboards. Finally, the strongest and most appealing track on the album is 'Return To Dust' which is marked by excellent bass work (again), tricky shifts in tempo and time signatures, and some very creative fret and keyboard work. As for the rest: solid and creative progressive metal. The only song that got me scratching my head was 'Through Crimson Skies' with its strange vocals.
Mindwarp Chamber's 'Delusional Reality' is a fine piece of American progressive metal. It's one of those works that you have to listen to several times to get all the musical nuances and subtleties. Highly recommended!
