With a successful debut album under their belts, Sweden's Lugnet arrives with their second effort, Nightwalker. The album comes with new personnel including new and second guitarist Matti Norlin (Badge) and vocalist Johan Fahlberg from Germany's Jaded Heart. No, I don't know if Fahlberg has left that band.
Being my first round with Lugnet, I didn't know what to expect from this band. But the album art gave me some clue. Swedish artist Robin Gnista gives us something straight off the cover of a Seventies vinyl LP. And that is definitely Lugnet's musical direction: Seventies heavy rock with nuances of psychedelic and blues rock drifting through the songs. The band has fuzzed out twin guitars, ripping leads, thumping beat and groove from a heavy rhythm section, and Fahlberg singing with soulful growling gusto.
For the album, Nightwalker is essentially an LP's worth of tunes. Eight songs over 42 minutes, perfect for a vinyl setting. Mostly the songs are heavy and steady with a deep bass and drum line, churning groove, and all leading to some sizzling guitar solos. Heavy rockers include Die For You, Begging, Cockroach, and Kill Us All. Conversely, something like Never Again can bump up the pace, getting a tad faster at the halfway point with a guitar solo. But the title track, Nightwalker, gives you more punch, adding speed to their groove. Death Laughs At You is simply heavy and plodding in its movement, sounding like doom rock with some guitar lines stolen from guitarist Robin Trower. All in all, if you like Seventies style heavy rock spiced with notes of psychedelic and blues rock, you will enjoy Lugnet's Nightwalker.
