Rising from the City of Brotherly Love, Rise Twain features two Philadelphia music veterans, Brett William Kull (Echolyn, Grey Eye Glances, Francis Dunnery’s New Progressives) and Jeremy Beck (Beck-Fields, The Scenic Route). The two musicians have crossed paths before in the studio, but both have also wanted to partner on a mutual singular project. The result is Rise Twain and their self-titled debut album for InsideOut Music.
With a spin or two, I found the duo and album to be an intriguing listen, perhaps a bit eclectic in character. The larger category is easily melodic and progressive rock, but like a Matryoshka doll there are other layers to be found. One is some simple pop sensibility, with songs like That Is Love and Oh This Life having catchy melodies and refrains. Another feature is the light acoustic guitar and piano lines that fill songs such as The Range, Oh This Life, and Prayers. There's also an ethereal, nearly hypnotic, atmosphere to some arrangements like The Range or especially Death Of Summer. Alternatively, some song songs are jacked up by strong guitar, including the aforementioned Prayers, but also Falling Skies and furious start of Golden. After these things, add the rich vocal arrangments led by Beck's soulful and passionate voice. In turn, listen to Golden once more to hear Kull join Beck in duet and harmony. In the end, I found Rise Twain and their debut album to be a surprising and intriguing collection of fine melodic progessive rock tunes. Quite entertaining and easily recommended.
